About the Program
CYC’s historic wrestling program has produced and developed successful wrestlers at all levels for over 20 years. CYC’s storied wrestling program has produced Olympic wrestlers, national champions, state champions, and titles at every level. The coaches found their success by empowering the youth in our community through discipline, dedication, desire. In the process, CYC members have learned the vital life lesson, “Wrestle through it.”

CYC’s Wrestling program hosts several Match Nights throughout the year, allowing for both CYC members and non-members the opportunity to improve their skills against other wrestlers in the area in a controlled competitive environment. Check our CYC Events Page for upcoming Match Night dates.

General Forms
CYC WRESTLING
YEAR ROUND CLASSES
K5 REC White Shirts
AGES: 5-10, Kindergarten through 5th Grade
An introductory level class that teaches the basics of wrestling and sets the foundation for further development of skills. At this level we emphasize gymnastics, body control, and weight distribution. Participants also learn the rules of the three different styles of wrestling (Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman) as well as some of the fundamental techniques.
K5 Royal Blue
AGES: 10-14, 5th grade through 8th grade
An intermediate level class for kids who have significant experience wrestling or who have progressed through the Light Blue Shirt Level class. These kids have attained mastery of the techniques and skills taught in the Light Blue Shirt Level and have passed the promotion test to enter the Royal Blue Level. Wrestlers begin to learn more techniques and skills involving; hand fighting, agility, gymnastics, body control, and weight distribution.
K5 REC Yellow Shirts
AGES: 5-10, Kindergarten through 5th Grade
A beginner level class for kids who have experience wrestling or who have progressed through the white shirt level class. These kids have attained mastery of techniques and skills taught in the White Shirt Level and have passed the promotion test to enter the Yellow Shirt Level. This class reinforces the basic skills and begin to progress to more techniques and skills involving gymnastics, body control, and weight distribution.
Middle School Level 1 White Shirts
AGES: 10-14, 6th through 8th grade
An introductory and intermediate level class that emphasizes the fundamentals needed to learn more advanced sport specific skills and tactics. The curriculum is geared to meet the needs of CYC students and to prepare them for beginner and intermediate level competitions. This class has six different learning components:
Proper warm-up (stretching and lead-up exercises)
Kinesthetic awareness exercises (tumbling)
Review of basic wrestling skills and or new wrestling skills
Live wrestling
Wrestling games
Strength/conditioning (pull-ups or rope climbs, push-ups, and sit-ups).
K5 Intermediate Level 1, Light Blue Shirts
AGES: 7-10, Kindergarten through 5th Grade
An intermediate level class for kids who have experience wrestling or who have progressed through the Yellow Shirt Level class. These kids have attained mastery of the technique and skills taught in the Yellow Shirt level and have passed the promotion test to enter the Light Blue. Wrestlers begin to learn more techniques and skills involving; hand fighting, agility, gymnastics, body control, and weight distribution.
Middle School Level 2, Dark Blue Shirts
AGES: 10-14, 6th through 8th grade
This class has been designed for students that have demonstrated the skill set, and have the desire to follow a comprehensive training program. Students will be required to follow specific guidelines, a training plan, and a competition plan designed by the CYC coaching staff. This is a very critical time in the overall athletic development; the emphasis will be on learning how to train and follow a training plan with more sport specific skills and tactics. Competitions will be an important part of the program but winning will not be the main emphasis. Students will be required to attend all practices and competitions. If students miss two classes or competitions in a month they will be dropped from the program. This class is for students who have passed the yellow, light blue, red, and dark blue promotion tests.
SEASONAL CLASSES
High School Level 1 Greco Roman/Freestyle: (Spring and Summer)
This class is designed for High School wrestlers new to the international styles of wrestling. The curriculum will be based around learning the fundamentals of Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling. The curriculum is geared for wrestlers with Folkstyle experience and new wrestlers. Wrestlers with Folkstyle experience will learn how to adapt the techniques they already know for Freestyle and Greco-Roman. There are a limited number of spots available for these classes, and students will be dropped from the class if they miss more than two classes within a month.
High School Level 1: (Fall)
These classes are designed for beginning level wrestlers new to Folkstyle wrestling. The curriculum will be based around learning the fundamentals of wrestling, and designed to prepare students for the upcoming high school season. There are a limited number of spots available for these classes, and students will be dropped from the class if they miss more than one class within a month.
HS Elite Wrestling Program: (Spring and Summer)
Program Dates: March 8th-July
Application Deadline: March 1st, 2022
This class is designed for highly skilled Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestlers who want to compete and succeed at Regional, National, and International level competitions. This is a commitment-based program. Wrestlers admitted into the class will be required to attend all designated practices, summer training camps, competitions, and clinics; as well as follow a training and competition plan set forth by the CYC coaching staff. We will maintain a limited number of spots in this class. This is to insure more coach to wrestler interaction time emphasizing the skills needed to be successful. With committed workout partners, experienced coaches, and a training/competition plan we can offer a unique program for wrestlers who are serious about succeeding.
High School Level 2: (Fall)
This class is designed to help prepare wrestlers for the upcoming high school varsity wrestling season. The curriculum will involve refining the wrestler’s knowledge of the fundamentals and basics of wrestling, and teaching them new and more advanced skills. We will maintain a limited number of spots in this class to insure more coach to wrestler interaction time to help emphasize the skills needed to be successful.

Meet the Coaches
Steve Gee
Head Wrestling Coach
Steve started Coaching at the CYC in 2002 and began coaching full time in 2007. He graduated De La Salle High School in 2002 and continued to wrestle at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo from 2002-2007. He Graduated Cal Poly in 2007 with a BS in Applied Nutrition. Some of his wrestling accomplishments include being a 2x Greco All American, a California Triple Crown Winner in 2002, 2x Regional Champion, Multiple time Greco State Champion, Assistant Coach at De La Salle High School since 2007 while the Team had two top 4 finishes at the CIF State Championships, 11 NCS Tournament Championships, 13 NCS Dual Team Championships, 14 League Championships, 2 CIF State Champions, 6 CIF State Finalists, 53 NCS Champions and as an Assistant CYC Coach, the Team had 41 California Age Group State Championships and 13 National Champions.
Robby Smith
Head Assistant Wrestling Coach
Robby started wrestling at the CYC at the age of nine in 1996. He attended San Ramon Valley High School and graduated in 2005. He has spent 13 years live at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs & coached for the wildest wrestling club at Northwestern University from 2018-2020. Some of his wrestling accomplishments include being a 4x EBAL Champion, 3x NCS Champion, 3x CIF State Placer, a multiple time age division Greco Roman and Freestyle State; Regional; & National Champion and World Team Member, a 4x Senior World Team Member 5th in the world twice, Pan-American Champion, Pan-American games bronze medalist, and 2016 Olympian in Rio De Janeiro.
Dwayne Guerrero
Dwayne had been coaching since 2018 and has also coached at the De La Salle High School. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 2019 and is a current student at Menlo College. He has many wrestling accomplishments including being a 2x Greco State Champion, 1x Freestyle State Champion, 3x Greco Regional Placer, 2x Freestyle Regional Placer, 1x Folkstyle Regional Placer, Novice Greco All-American, 2x Greco World Duals Placer- 2nd, 5th, Former Olympic Training Center Athlete, 4x EBAL Champion, 3x NCS Champion, and a 3x CIF Qualifier.
Adrian Gomez
Adrian has been a CYC coach for 4 years and has been wrestling since 2005. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 2017 and is a current student at San Fransisco State University. He is a Bronze Certified USA wrestling Coach and also has had many wrestling accomplishments including being 3x EBAL champ, NCS Champ, 3x State Qualifier, Youth Freestyle All American, 2x Junior Greco All American, Junior Greco Western Regional Champion, Former Olympic Training Site Athlete, and Former D1 Wrestler.
Nathan Cervantez
Nate has been a CYC coach since 2014 and has wrestled since 2005. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 2015 and currently attends San Fransisco State University. He is a certified USA Wrestling Coach Bronze. he also has many wrestling accomplishments which include going to the CIF 2015 State Finals, 3x North Coast Section Champ, 2x East Bay Athletic League Champ, 4x CIF State Qualifier, 5th Senior Greco National Championships 2019, and was 2019 DII NCAA Qualifier – Top 12.
